One of the most common questions we get from people who have never hired an interior designer before is, “Why should I hire one?”
This is one of the best questions you can ask when contemplating the design of your space because it will help you identify what your needs are.
There are many misconceptions about what an interior designer does and how their expertise can benefit you. Many people assume only the extremely wealthy hire designers to revamp their second and third houses just for the fun of it. Others confuse interior designers with decorators and think they only handle the “pretty” accessories and decor. While these perceptions may be true for some, they aren’t actually the primary reason most people hire interior designers.
Here are three common reasons most people hire an interior designer and see the value in it:
1. You don’t have time to do it yourself.
Many people underestimate how much time is actually involved when it comes to deciding upon a design vision, taking precise measurements, determining how to “work” the space, selecting and shopping for materials, coordinating with vendors and general contractors (if you’re working on a new build or remodel), and finally, putting it all together. Trying to envision the final outcome overwhelms many because they often can’t picture the options, let alone know or have the tools to plan it out visually. Not to mention that, even with a small one room renovation, the time involved design to completion can be an average of 20-40 hours per week for 6 to 8 weeks, or more!
Did we just give you a headache thinking about that list?
We love taking the load off a client by assisting them in executing their dream by navigating the best options, myriad of decisions, and dedicated time needed for, and with, them. Our expertise protects our clients from costly mistakes or “I wish we’d thought of….” comments after the fact. It’s so rewarding, and we’re often told this reason alone is enough to justify hiring a designer!
2. You need help pulling your vision together or need assistance discovering your vision.
Have you purchased a new home and are wondering how to choose the right paint, flooring and furniture to make the whole house feel cohesive? Or are you planning construction of a new house and are overwhelmed with how to choose the right materials to stay in your budget, accomplish the look you’re wanting, and at the same time, be quality enough to stand the test of time and life? Have you just signed a lease for a new office / business space and are wondering how you’re going to “work” the space and make your square footage function while also adding to your brand and success?
It can be really challenging to make your “dream theme” come together in real life! That’s what interior designers are for.
We get to know you and your lifestyle, listen to your desires, and make sure you see it come to life in a practical yet beautiful way. Our goal is not to make you implement the latest trends or our own personal taste. We know your space is YOUR space and we want you to enjoy every crack and crevice of it! If you are unsure of the direction you’d like to go, that’s OK too! Hiring an experienced professional allows the busy, inexperienced, or indifferent client to sit back and let us take the wheel from start to finish.
3. You want to save and/or make money.
We love the look of surprise on the faces of our clients when we get the opportunity to save them hundreds or even thousands of dollars! The up front investment of design fees many times can be offset by peace of mind, time savings, guidance on the options and/or materials that will save you money, and increased value in their property.
Another way we frequently save money for our clients is by avoiding costly mistakes. There are many challenges when designing a remodel, business space, or home. The mishaps experienced by a few past clients come to mind: overpriced vendors, faulty workmanship or material selections, incorrect measurements on space and custom pieces, wallpaper mishaps, etc.
What’s better than saving money? Making money!
One of our favorite tasks is getting to work alongside homeowners who are remodeling with a view to selling their home in the near future or want to update / stage it to sell right away. Most are amazed at how much equity value they may gain by doing some minor remodeling to make their property more current and ready to appeal to buyers who are also looking at brand new homes in the market. Homes are also proven to sell much faster just by by rearranging furniture to accentuate the size and flow of rooms, painting a few walls and selecting psychologically calming colors in their home. We have seen many homeowners increase their sale price and/or avoid reducing their price against heavy competition, simply because their home became more aesthetically pleasing to the average eye. Hiring a designer can oftentimes increase your home value, increase showings, and ultimately help your home sell faster!
Now that we’ve covered a few basics, we hope you will consider bringing an Interior Designer on board for your next design project! And, if you’d like to discuss how hiring a designer will specifically be advantageous to your project, we’d love for you to schedule a complimentary Discovery Appointment! 🙂

I like how you mentioned that an interior designer will definitely put in their best to spruce up your residence the right way. Recently, my mom told me that she would like to renovate her homestyle since she thinks it’s outdated. I will definitely recommend her to contact an interior designer so she can get the results she is looking for.
